Plastic Mermaids:

Plastic Mermaids: ‘A memorable name that’s easy to spell’

Earlier last week, when the sun was shining and the sky was blue, we dragged ourselves away from OnTheWight HQ and headed north to Gurnard.

The motive behind our journey to the other end of the Island was to meet up and have a chat with some of the members of Isle of Wight music-makers, Plastic Mermaids.

Regular readers will’ve heard us bang on about these chaps over the last year or so and many of you may’ve even followed our advice to gone to see them play live.

Three of the five
Our journey to Gurnard took us to a secret tropical greenhouse where we sat down with three of the band members, brothers Doug and Jamie Richards and Chris Jones.

We know Chris from previous bands he’s been involved with such as The Shutes and Guy Page Trio, but this was the first time we’d met with Doug and Jamie.

Widespread praise for the quality of the band’s output – including the live performance at the beginning of the month – certainly hadn’t gone to their heads, all three came across as humbly modest, down-to-earth chaps.

The skinny
Over a cup of tea and a batch of gluten-free brownies, we heard about how the band came about, the record label supporting them, how they work together, that recent highly acclaimed gig at Quay Arts, as well as the preparation for the upcoming EP launch.

The EP (which you can pre-order now – see below for details) was recorded and mixed by the band, except Polaroids which was mixed by Paul Butler in his Steam Room studio and will be launched to (yet another) sell-out crowd in London on 31st March.

Why not grab yourself a cup of tea and sit back and listen to the interview with Doug, Jamie and Chris (J) from Plastic Mermaids.

In a typically British style, the conversation ends with a brief discussion about the weather. Naturally.

By the way, we forget to ask whilst recording how the lads came up with the name Plastic Mermaids, but they later told us, “We just wanted something memorable which no-one else was called and was easy to spell!”

You can pre-order Plastic Mermaids’ debut EP through Cross Keys Records
