Residents on the Isle of Wight are being reminded to keep their homes secure following a burglary in Ryde earlier this month.
Between 10.45pm on 2 August and 6.45am on 3 August a property in Bellevue Road was targeted by thieves.
A large amount of household items were stolen from the 
home including a Samuel Bough oil painting, pictured, a William Miller Frazer oil painting and a Rolex Cellini men’s wristwatch.
Second attempt
On that same evening, in nearby Nelson Street, a man and a woman were disturbed as they tried to enter a property.
Detective Chief Inspector Nick Heelan said:
“We are appealing to anyone who may have information about these incidents to come forward.
“We would also like to hear from anyone who has been offered items for sale, such as the paintings mentioned, under unusual circumstances.
“Your information could help us return these items to their rightful owners.
“As a result of these two incidents we would also like to take this opportunity to remind residents to keep their homes secure during the summer months.
“At this time of year it is not unusual for burglary rates to rise along with the temperatures.
“The hot temperatures have meant we’re more likely to leave doors and windows open to keep our homes cool.
“Although this may make your house more bearable when you return home, leaving windows open all day is sometimes an invitation for the opportunistic burglar.
“Similarly, it’s important to lock garden gates and garage doors when you’re not around. Tidy tools away, don’t leave valuables on display and ensure you lock up properly before going to bed.
“If you seen anyone acting suspiciously call 101. If you seen anyone enter a property suspiciously, call 999.
“If you are going away on holiday there are some really simple ways for you to protect yourselves from burglary.
“Don’t post your plans on social media – you wouldn’t announce to a room full of strangers where you live and that your house will be empty for the next two weeks would you? So do not do it online.
“Whilst you’re away, it’s important to make your home appeared lived in. Ask a neighbour to look out for anything suspicious and collect mail from the doormat.
“Make sure all your valuables are out of sight before you leave the house.
“Don’t put your home address on your luggage in case you lose it, put a phone number.”
Arrests made
Two people, both from Ryde, have been arrested in connection with the burglary. They have been bailed until 4th September.
