Police have thanked members of the public who tried in vain to help an elderly driver following a road traffic incident in Newport on Monday.

It is believed that the Freshwater man, who police have not named, could have suffered a medical episode at the wheel before losing control of his car and colliding with an unoccupied Vauxhall Omega on Holyrood Street.

He received medical treatment at the scene before being taken to St Mary’s Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

PC Hannah Pothecary said: “I would just like to thank all of the members of public who tried to help the gentleman, attempted first aid and assisted with controlling the traffic before we arrived.

“After investigating the circumstances of the incident, we do not believe he died as a result of the crash but rather that the crash was the result of a medical episode at the wheel. A file has now been passed to the coroner so he may release his findings.

“Our thoughts are with the gentleman’s family at this very sad time.”
