The Pond Cafe: Head Chef leaves after eight weeks

In a surprise move, after around only eight weeks in the job at The Pond Cafe in Bonchurch, Head Chef Chris Denney will be “leaving by mutual consent” to explore pastures new.

Readers will remember the announcement of his arrival was made in May following the departure of Robert Thompson as Chef Patron for The Hambrough Group back in April.

A spokeswoman for The Hambrough Group told OnTheWight,

“Chris is leaving by mutual consent to pursue other interests, and will be continuing to expand upon his worldwide culinary knowledge.

“He plans initially to spend a couple of months in Brazil doing stages at top restaurants. His Sous Chef Joe Gould will be taking over the Head Chef role.

“The Hambrough Group would like to wish Chris every success for the future.”

Oh dear, yet another reason for locals to have a go at The Hamborough Group. They’ll bitch & whine about the Winter gardens, blah blah blah. What they seem to forget is that it was an eye sore prior to Kevin Sussmilch buying it, & yet bugger all was ever said. So really islanders, get a grip. If I lived on the island I’d be pressurising the… Read more »

If you lived on the island you would be concerned about the Winter Gardens. It holds a special place in all islander’s hearts, not just those live in Ventnor, because we grew up with it and have fond memories of going there to see shows as a child, our first music gigs as teenagers and then carrying on into adulthood. The state the building has been left… Read more »

How utterly amazing to live inside the world of Chef Hermes. A world where you’re a self-imagined expert on every subject under the sun. A world where, because you (think?) you have a speciality knowledge in one area – cooking – you can freely and extensively pontificate about things that you know absolutley nothing about (eg. even those with the faintest clue about anything to do with… Read more »

I mean really ‘Clair’, I impart well researched posts with information gathered from well connected sources & information already on the web. And yet I read constantly how Kevin Sussmilch is virtually vilified by locals when he’s the one taking the risks. If i know… Read more »

I believe the previous council did not spend as much on roads in the last four years because they knew they were about to enter into a 25 year PFI contract and someone else would be mending them.

Mr Hermes, I thought you might appreciate a quick recap of how we got to where we are, you being disconnected from the build up to this, ‘n’ all. The last administration at the IW Council (Conservative as it turns out) made the decision that the £23k/year paid by IW Council to Ventnor TC as a management fee for the Winter Gardens and the (only) £15k/year they… Read more »

I can assure you there has been no work on the site. The workmen you saw were probably doing the ground surveys.

RE Islanders.
Have you been inside WG? No, probably not.
I’m sure if I look hard enough I’ll find some photos of the workmen on site.

If they were only do surveying, why would they be using a mini JCB?

Facts? I’ve had more access to THG than probably anybody else on here

I’m assuming Chef Hermes doesn’t live here. Sounds like he lives in an elitist heaven of £100.00 meals. For his information us locals owned the place before our council flogged it for a quid to some bloke whose main concern seems to be his own pocket( see also Botanic Gardens ). It seems unlikely that the owners of the group are that challenging to work with, as Robert was at the hotel for a few years. Possibly the most recent chefs have been challenging to work with. Chefs as a profession don’t have the *best* reputation for being hyper-reliable, reasonable types…. although maybe I’m just believing the image portrayed by the media which is why some of them… Read more »

If your query is ‘how did we arrive here’ then the answer is simple – a Conservative-led administration hell-bent on flogging off as many community assets as possible. That is how the Winter Gardens came to be owned for £1 by a group who may/may not have over-stretched themselves and committed to an ambitious proposal which is a long way outside of their comfort zone and experience.… Read more »

History does have a knack of repeating itself, particularly among those inclined to ignore it. In the 1870s, as is well-known, the German industrialist William Spindler swept into Ventnor with grand plans for transforming the place (and, when those failed, St Lawrence instead).
