Isle of Wight council say they have received multiple reports from residents across the Bay area about a strong smell of gas.
The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) has said that a vessel venting gas in the Bay is the likely cause.
Among the many vessels sitting in Sandown Bay at the moment, includes Gas Xanadu, a tanker that holds Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG)
No issue with local gas network
SGN has confirmed there are no problems with their gas network at this time.
Despite this, Godshill Primary School has been temporarily closed as a precaution due to the noticeable smell in and around the building.
Council team managing school response
The Isle of Wight council’s schools’ team is managing the response on the ground while awaiting further confirmation from SGN.
They are seeking to determine whether the smell at the school is connected to the venting vessel or has another cause.
Update: Following a series of checks carried out by SGN earlier today, the school site has been confirmed as safe. Godshill Primary School will reopen as normal tomorrow.
Monitoring continues
The situation is being closely monitored and all relevant agencies remain in contact.
Anyone in the affected area who begins to feel unwell is advised to seek medical attention.
