Unvalidated Key Stage 2 SATs results for Isle of Wight middle schools have been published, indicating a decrease in the number of pupils achieving both English and Maths at level 4 or above.

Figures from the government show the number of Island 11 year olds achieving level 4 in both English and Maths has dropped by seven percentage points to 62% compared to last year. This is 12 percentage points behind the 2010 National Average.

10% drop in level 4 maths
The number of pupils obtaining level 4 in English has dropped five percentage points to 74% compared to 2010. There has also been a drop in performance at level 4 Maths, with the Isle of Wight down to 69% compared to 79% last year.

Steve Beynon, IW Council Chief Executive said, “The overall results are disappointing with a number of schools not reaching their predicted levels. However, there were some significant results achieved by some middle schools.

“Particularly pleasing are Forelands Middle School, who saw an increase of 9 percentage points achieving 82% level 4 with English and maths; Bishop Lovett who improved by 8 percentage points and Downside by 13 percentage points.

“Regrettably, too many of the schools saw a decrease in performance taking the results back to the level of those achieved in 2009.”

“Determined to see an improvement in education”
Dawn Cousins, Lead member for Children and Young People said: “Whilst we recognise this has been a challenging year for our middle schools the results achieved by some are very good and it is the variability across all the schools which has led to the overall drop in performance.

“The new two tier system, which comes into full effect from September, will provide continuity for pupils. There won’t be any disruption for young people changing schools midway through Key Stage 2, and for the local authority and parents it also means there will be greater accountability.

“We are determined to see an improvement in education outcomes for young people and believe that the new two tier system will help us achieve an upturn in performance levels which, despite the success in some areas, remains below those we should expect for the Island.

“This is an issue for governors, teachers, pupils and parents to all tackle and we as the local authority will be monitoring progress vigorously and working with all partners to achieve a higher level of pupil attainment.”
