Sad news this morning, as we hear on the radio that Mary Travers from one of the most successful folk groups of the 1960s, Peter, Paul and Mary has died.
The 72 year old singer had been battling against Leukemia for the last four years, and although a bone marrow transplant was reportedly successful, it is thought that complications from the chemotherapy treatment were the cause of her death.
The band were famous not only for their songs, but also their activism. Strong opposers to the Vietnam War and supporters of the anti-racism movement, their track ‘If I had a Hammer’ became an anthem for the movement.
Mary will be remembered fondly around the world today, as well as here at VB.
We’re sure that you all remember the band’s cover of John Denver’s wonderfully emotive, ‘Leaving on a Jet Plane’, a song that conjures up all sorts of memories from the 1960s.
