Ray Richardson prepares for charity run after losing 13 stone in less than a year

Just a year after a dramatic weight loss, labourer Ray Richardson is taking part in a ten-mile charity run in memory of his friend.

Ray, 35, went from 26 to 13 stone in 11 months by changing his diet and following a strict exercise plan.

He is now preparing for October’s Great South Run, to raise money for Meningitis Now, after his close friend, father-of-three Sam Willis, died from the infection in 2023.

Richardson: I really hope to raise as much as I can for this amazing cause
Ray said,

“He was a big part of so many people’s lives and we all miss him.

“Sam and his family were supported by Meningitis Now and so I really hope to raise as much as I can for this amazing cause.”

Man v Fat football programme
Football-mad Ray was at home watching a game in February last year, when he knew he had to change his lifestyle.

He started working with a personal trainer and followed a new eating plan, while also joining the Man v Fat football programme.

Ray said,

“It was hard for the first couple of weeks but once I got into the plan, it started becoming easier.

“It was about getting into the right mindset and sticking with it. There’s tough days but I had to do it.

“I now cycle and run to work, play more football and I just generally feel so much better.”

Earlier this year, Ray was named as one of the UK’s ‘biggest losers’ across the national Man v Fat initiative, in recognition of his incredible weight loss.

And though he has now reached his weight target, Ray continues to play for the team and hopes to inspire its other members. He said,

“I still go to the gym with some of the guys because I really want to help them reach their goals.

“If my experience can spur them on too, then great.”
