Remembering the fallen of the First World War during ‘Lights Out’

Today (Monday 4 August) marks 100 years since the First World War was declared.

To commemorate the start of the War, the Isle of Wight Council will be taking part in a national event called ‘Lights Out’, being held between 10pm and 11pm tonight.

It will see buildings across the Island turn off their lights for an hour of shared reflection of the Great War.

Councillor Ian Stephens is leader of the council. He said:

“There are a number of events taking part across the Island to mark the centenary of the outbreak of war in 1914.

“Lights Out recreates what people went through during the war when enemy bombers flew overhead which must have been a terrifying ordeal.

“We are delighted to be taking part in this very worthwhile event on 4 August and hope many other people across the Island will also be marking the occasion at 10pm.”

The organisers of Lights Out encourage everyone to take part in the UK by turning off their lights between 10pm and 11pm on 4 August, and leave just a single light or a candle on for the hour of reflection.
