Resurfacing of Fairlee Road starts next week

This in from Gavin on behalf of Island Roads, Ed

Work is to begin shortly on a major scheme to resurface part of Fairlee Road – one of the main roads into Newport.

Work undertaken in sections
In order to minimise disruption, the work – on the stretch from Medina College to near the Staplers Road junction – will be undertaken at night between the hours of 7.30pm and 6am. Access to the college, Medina Sports Centre, Medina Theatre and Beaulieu Respite will be maintained.

The works on Fairlee Road will be carried out in a number of phases and once completed, the link road between Medina Way and Fairlee Road will also be resurfaced, again using overnight work to reduce disruption.

Mobile visitor centre
The work is scheduled to begin on March 7 – early in the year to avoid the busier summer months and of course, so as not to interfere with the Isle of Wight Festival.

Residents affected by the work have already been written to giving them advanced notice.

On Wednesday March 2, Island Roads’ mobile visitor centre will be at Seaclose Park between noon and 2pm and then at Medina Sports Centre between 3pm and 5pm to answer any question residents may have.

Initial phases
The initial phases are scheduled to last between three and five weeks avoiding the Easter weekend.

Works are being undertaken in sections, again in order to limit disruption in what is a residential road as well as a main route in and out of the county town. Island Roads are currently investigating the northern section of the road between Medina College and the Racecourse roundabout, with a view to reconstruction works starting at a later date.

Keith Gourlay, Island Roads construction manager, said:

“This is clearly a major section of the Island’s strategic network and by working overnight at a quieter time of the year we are doing all we can to minimise inconvenience.

“We will, of course keep residents informed as work progresses.”
