Riverside Centre / Council Fight: What’s Going On?: The Rumours

You’ll be aware of the disagreement between the Isle of Wight and the Riverside Centre has reignited.

Secret meetingBoth sides are playing their cards close to their chest which makes clear quotable news reporting very difficult, but someone claiming to have the inside story has been in touch with VentnorBlog.

All unverified
We haven’t been able to verify any of this information yet, but we thought that with the caveat that it may not be accurate, you’d still like to hear about it. As we’ve made it clear – it may be 100% incorrect.

Take it as billed …

Back in 1994
It’s been alleged that back in 1994, the board of the Riverside Centre temporarily signed over the ownership of the Riverside centre to the Isle of Wight council. The reason? A nifty accounting manoeuvre. Two members of the board were from the council.

We’ve heard elsewhere, also unconfirmed, that the council now refuses to accept that it was a temporary arrangement.

That’s what we’re told is the history, so jumping up to this year, what’s happened now?

200+ page dossier
We’ve heard from a number of sources, all unconfirmed, that a 200+ page dossier on the background about the history between the Riverside Centre and the council has been compiled by a law firm on behalf of the Riverside Centre.

From a single, unconfirmed source, we’ve heard that the Isle of Wight council has refused to even read this dossier until the Riverside pay the council what they claim is owed – around £200,000.

The Riverside Centre refuse to pay this amount until the council pays them money they say the IWC owe them.

So it’s deadlock.

More details this week
There’s a meeting at the Riverside planned for Wednesday this week where the Riverside tell VB they plan to layout all of the details of what’s been going on.

Yet again we are seeing another Tory Council made mess developing. Their arrogance and incompetance seem to have no bounds and I doubt whether they’ll ever be any different until they’ve destroyed all our public services.

Talk about Tory IWC ignorance! -refusing to read Legally endorsed historical Report that highlights the seemingly very dubious ‘temporary’ arrangement, and IWC own imitation of Van Hoogstraten by willfully raising unaffordable 50% rent hike at this financial time! Worthy of comparison to 1999/2000 IWC contrasting attitude and race to hand over ownership of Quay Arts Centre to avoid maintenance liabillity. That IOW public money raised the majority… Read more »

This temporary arrangement seems a bit sly on the part of the riverside centre. a nifty accounting manouver. I have to wonder why the riverside centre dont have a bit of paper that states clearly that the change of ownership is temporary. But then I also have to wonder what sort of questions would be asked if such a bit of paper did exist. I suspect the… Read more »

Yep -this is Gospel.

The letters and e-mails exist.

The reason for this? So the council could claim back the VAT!

Perhaps Her Majesties Revenue and Customs should start poking their noses in?

Assuming VAT was, then, 15% then that would come to a very cool £150,000.

Nice money if you can get it.

What a mess. Or to be more accurate, another fine mess the council have gotten itself into. They are the Laurel and Hardy of local authorities. To err once, may be seen as simple bad luck, but this council has made an art form of messing up anything and everything it touches. Tell me, how many months til the next election? Let’s call it FFPD, free from… Read more »

Of course. Andrew Turner Mp and his partner Carole are now tenants at the Riverside centre.

I expect it is pure coincidence that the council are telling them all to pay extortionate rent or **** off and go :)

A lot of comment aimed at the council, but should we not be questioning the back hand deals of the riverside centre charity. If I understand it right, local people paid for the land and building in the first place so the riverside centre should never of handed over ownership in the first place. temp or not… More corruption on the island, gives a bad name to… Read more »

But that’s one of the points, isn’t it.

Look at who was in charge of Riverside then and what were their day jobs.

Look at the legal documents – who signed ’em on behalf of Riverside and what were their day jobs.

Interesting that the Riverside Centre Board are refusing to go to abitration with a neutral body, and have now cancelled the public meeting. What do they fear? Perhaps things are not as they try to portray?

That’s not quite correct! The letter from Riverside cancelling (or deferring) the stakeholders meetimng makes it plain that Riverside are quite willing to go to mediation it is the council that are refusing mediation. Quote from Riverside letter: “Riverside have been advised that they should seek the Council’s agreement to enter Mediation as this is less costly than Arbitration or Litigation for both Riverside and the IW… Read more »

I don’t believe it is.

It’s putting the truth in the public domain. Something this discredited bunch of twisters that calls itself a council are terrified of.
