IW Councillor Tim Hunter- Henderson, Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport has taken the decision to accept £6.2m of central Government funding to upgrade the Ryde Gateway.
The decision, made under delegated powers, hopes to draw on the Government funds that have already been approved by Department for Transport (DfT). The other two options for the decision were to decline the grant and bear the entire costs of developing the scheme or to abandon the scheme.
The proposed project is based predominately on the site of the existing railway and bus station at Ryde, which currently handles 2.7 passengers a year. The new development will include a new railway station, bus station and pier access road. When complete, it’s hoped that there will be improved accessibility and transfer between an amazing twelve modes of transport – we didn’t know there were so many.
Works to the Ryde Interchange, as it was previously known, has been delayed while contractual details were being examined.
The availability of the funding is a good thing to Ryde and the Island as a whole, as many people access the Island via Ryde using the Hovercraft or the Fastcat.
