The Isle of Wight council’s consultation on road layout changes at the bus station and entrance to the Pier closes today (Tuesday).
The changes are part of the £10m Ryde Interchange Project, which the council say will
“Improve facilities and connectivity for cyclists, pedestrians, bus and rail users as well as Wightlink FastCat passengers with the interchange area reorganised to provide a more pedestrian-friendly area with additional areas of public use.”
Petition reaches 1,320 signatures
Local Ryde businesses (pictured from left Jeff Becker – Pier Cafe, Cathy Foulkes – former Ryde Development Trust Chair, Tommy Booth – The Ice Cream Parlour and Dave Sargison – Chocolate Apothecary) will be presenting the petition to County Hall today, which includes signatures from 1,320 Isle of Wight residents.
The group say “the scheme is unsafe for pedestrians, diminishes our attractive facilities, is un-necessary and over-engineered”.
Proper planning process
Those against the scheme argue that it should go through the planning process to ensure community scrutiny and that professional bodies are consulted properly.
The IWC say they are “are not increasing roads and taking away public space” and have “followed the planning procedures for developing highway improvements correctly”.
