Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service presented to Isle of Wight Bus Partnership

His Royal Highness Prince Michael of Kent presented the Isle of Wight Bus Partnership with their Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service during his recent visit to the Island.

The award was received on behalf of the volunteers by Alan Stott; the citation for the award was read by Deputy Lieutenant, Dr Nicholas England.

After the presentation His Royal Highness met volunteer drivers and regular users of the bus service.

Isle of Wight Bus Partnership
The Isle of Wight Bus Partnership was formed in 2011, when it was necessary for the council to cease funding uneconomic rural routes.

A partnership was quickly formed between the council, Southern Vectis and the volunteer group. Volunteers stepped in, replacing professionals, to drive buses on routes 22, 24 and 32.

Over the ten years, 43 volunteer drivers have driven the buses including Sandown Mayor Councillor Ian Ward and Councillor Richard Priest.

John Berry, John Read and Roger Cooney are the longest serving volunteers having driven throughout the ten-year period.

Peacey Wilcox: We are indebted to the volunteers for their commitment
Council leader, Cllr Lora Peacey Wilcox said,

“The partnership provides an invaluable service to local isolated residents — we have had countless positive comments about how helpful the drivers are.

“We are indebted to the volunteers for their commitment — so many people over the years have enabled us to have this service. My sincere gratitude and thanks to all.”
