Ryde Queen Raises £600 for PS Monarch

Ryde Queen Salvage Helps PS MonarchFantastic to hear that PS Monarch managed today to raise £600 at auction, kick starting their campaign to raise £15,000 for a new boiler for the wonderfully cute Paddle Steamer that any of you visiting the Medina may have seen.

The owners of PS Ryde, aka Ryde Queen (pictured), which is soon to be cut up and disposed of, gave permission for PS Monarch Skipper Matt O’Crowley to go aboard and salvage any decorative items that might be left.

The result of the salvage was a solid brass engine console which has taken months of restoration work and was then sold today at the Island Auction Rooms as part of the BBC’s “Flog It” programme (we understand they shot footage for three one-hour shows).

Ryde Queen Salvage Helps PS MonarchMatt said,
“To achieve national publicity for not just the Monarch, but also the Ryde is something that doesn’t come about every day. There are plans afoot to rescue the Ryde’s engines at the very least and stop her from becoming a distant memory, exposure like this may lead to a new era for the ship which is something that is greatly needed.

“Each time we pass the Ryde, we give her a salute on our whistle to say thank you to her and I dream of the day that one day that might be reciprocated-although I believe this to be unlikely.”

After the busy bidding (from mainland buyers) and final sale of the console, Matt was amazed and astounded at the number of people bidding and the figure raised.

For full information about the auction, or to become a volunteer crew member on the Monarch, visit the PS Monarch’s Website.

I see that Monarch is now for sale. I know someone from PSPS was involved in buying the console as a group has been formed to save Ryde and the psps saved the console to give back to the group saving her. I wonder if leisure steam will give the money back to the psps as they no longer need it for their boiler

I dont understand why the console was taken from Ryde when she is a listed ship/ I totally agree that the money should be given back to the paddle steamer preservation society, they should have never had to have brought it in the first place.

It was a shock to learn that “Monarch” is now for sale. I watched Flog It last Friday and saw the sale of the PS Ryde’s console. I felt sympathy for the poor old Ryde, but thought at least the money was being put toward something worthwhile, but now I’m not so sure. Who bought the Ryde’s console and what’s going to be done with it? Does… Read more »

I see a couple of fittings I recognise from my disco days appear in Monarch’s for sale photos.

I see Ryde has a 2 page spread in the National Historic Ships annual report.

Ryde is definately a vessel I will be keeping my eye on. I think she is close to most of the Islands heart……….long live ‘The Boat!!’

Where did the rumour about Ryde being cut up come from?

I missed flog it, and its no longer on iPlayer. Does anyone have it, and want to send it to me?

A few points that might need to be clarified here. Firstly, the console and other fittings were purchased from the owners of the Ryde at the time. Neither the PSPS nor indeed the Ryde Trust have ever owned the vessel or its fittings, either materially or morally. We received some appalling emails from the secretary of the trust and he also made accusations of theft to the… Read more »

……..’and other fittings’ What else is missing off of the ship now then? It seems such a shame that even though the PSPS and other organisations have strived to save this vessel for as long as I can remember, that firstly the owners have never been willing to sell her, even when ‘Credible’ offers have been made, and yet somehow the ship has been gradually stripped, making… Read more »

I do beg your pardon Mr Anonymous but your rant is factually incorrect. As for any feud existing, this is unfounded and untrue. My only comments that I have made about the Ryde Trust in the past have been: a) Should the trust be unsuccessful in actually purchasing the vessel (remembering that they are currently raising funds for something that they do not currently own) what will… Read more »

I am a little confused as to why you have been spreading the rumour that the PS Ryde Trust are not a charity, and possibly not even Legit? They are quite obviously a registered charity. Paddle Steamer Ryde Trust- Registered in England No. 5894625 – Registered Charity No. 1135576 I have even checked this on the charity commission website. It takes a long time to register a… Read more »

Factually incorrect!? Which bit? If we break my post down:- Does anyone know what they are buying? Well, do they, you have purchased bits, others have purchased bits, some of these purchased bits (eg. The Funnel), are still on the ship and yet somehow included in the sale? Rants on other boards? Well I am a member of the other board particulary I remark about, and I… Read more »

@anonymous,
I dont think many people would be offended for you using your right to remain anonymous.

I am to say the last a bit confused by the Medina Monarch’s owners apparent disregard for the good works done by the Medway Queen Preservation Society though, if they can make such remarks about them, what chance do any other preservationist have.

Matt O’Crowley of Medina Monarch/Leisure Steam. I’m absolutely disgusted with your comments! ‘Wasted thousands of man hours and sums of money’! So I take it you would rather have seen the Medway Queen rot away on the banks of the river medina alongside Ryde then would you? Perhaps then she would be another lost icon you could take people to see. What an unbelievable thing to say… Read more »

Well Richard, you have but answered the situation as well as any, little more to say about the Ryde story, I think I can now let this rest, albeit at first quite shocked about the removal of parts from an historic and listed vessel to further the cause of a lesser vessel, on the pretence to preserve the future of another so called ‘Paddle Steamer’ I will… Read more »

Hi,
The above aside, Ryde now seriously needs help. The negotiations to purchase Ryde from the administrators seems to have faltered, for reasons unknown, and the trust needs your help now.

Please start by signing this petition:-

Anything else you can do to help, please visit http://www.psryde.co.uk and let us know.

come on the hull is un save able u can see right though her the medway was saved because it was in a state that it could be the best thing i think would be takeing out the main engine and other parts of use housing them in a museum so they will still tell the story of the ryde and all the work she done

Me thinks young Zack is perhaps mislead by gossip mongeres. You should not listen to others, when you dont know the facts for yourself. Medway Queen was in a much worse state than Ryde when she left the Isle of Wight, but never the less, she lasted another 25+ years and with all the hard work of the society now has a future for generations to come.… Read more »

Bit of an off topic, but just thought I would have a look at the Paddle Steamer on boatshed. I know she is a one off, so I guess a premium, but check out what else you can get for under £100,000. How about a Sealine 390 Statesman. Get a lot of boat for your money in this recession.
