Polling Station:

Shalfleet residents choose their favourites in local election

OnTheWight reader and commentator, David Walter, has been in touch with the results of the Shalfleet Parish Council by-election that took place yesterday (Thursday).

David says the number of valid ballot papers counted were 321, giving a turnout of 23.5%, which sounds about average for a parish election.

The results were as follows

110 Mike Carr
132 Stephen French
155 John Francis McGuirk
138 Pamela Vivien Myles
119 Shirley Stables
124 David Walter

The Returning Officer announced the following candidates were elected to the Shalfleet Parish council, says David.

John McGuirk
Pamela Myles
Stephen French

David added,

“I would like to thank everyone who voted for me and my many friends in the Parish who backed me when I had the daft idea to stand for the Parish Council. This was my first experience of standing for any kind of public office and I have enjoyed every minute of the campaign, meeting so many people and and often long and interesting discussions.

“I believe that I have also laid the foundation for several good new friendships, people I have met during the campaign. I’m sure that Dr Gordon Walker will be pleased with the effect on my waist when I see him next!

“I suppose I am a bit sad not to have been elected, but I respect democracy above everything. I am sure that we will have a fine new Parish Council, with a fine new Clerk in Sally Woods. While I have only recently met Pamela I know John and Steve well and they had my votes.

“Well done John, Pamela and Steve!”

Great stuff. Mike is a true local hero. As is John Wortham. Without this pair I wonder how much the council might have safely buried this past ten or twenty years?
Considering the council have an army of PR people, the fact that they discover anything is a minor miracle. Long may they live!

In secret or not, he was there to defend himself, if he done that with his usual arrogant, bullying attitude you can see why he needs re-.training

I think we need councillors like Joyce and Lumley who ask questions and get tough when they don’t get answers from officers and fellow councillors. It’s whistle blowing and it takes guts, but they end up being clobbered by the current regime who have a lot to hide.
It’s a good thing we don’t have labour camps, or do we ?

Hi all. Mike mentioned in his letter: “one case leading to officials being disciplined over a dodgy beach-cleaning contract”. Has anyone got any further details on this issue? The reason I ask is that my son is preparing for his media A levels and this could be of use to his course work. Thank you. Brenda.

Hi Brenda……I know that the husband of someone running the beach franchises got a massive contract unchallenged. She was internally investigated and nothing more was said.

RJC,it’s clear know nothing about this as the charge of bullying was dropped against Patrick Joyce.

I’m no legal expert, but as a Laywoman, I’d say that was defamation rjc. Cllr Joyce is obviously willing to spend money on restoring his reputation. I’d be careful if I were you.

the charge of bullying was dropped against Patrick Joyce.

I did not say it was. My comment was based on his attitude and statements after the case.

rjc.. It’s funny how you reserve your anger for Patrick Joyce because of a soundbite from a man who had been through 2 years of Hell. His only “crime” was to,at the request of the Chief Exec, try and sort out a problem. We,as tax payers, should be questioning who the individuals were who continuously sent “new” information about the case to the Standards Board. This meant that costs spiralled.… Read more »

Well Mrs A, I guess we will never know who was feeding info to the standards board over such a long period. I would guess that it was the councillors who stood to gain the most from the removal of Andy Sutton and Co? To my nose, this whole saga has the whiff of nasty in-fighting and power struggle? Shame no-one has blown the whistle. The dagger… Read more »
