Police are investigating a road traffic incident after a couple from Shanklin plunged over 80ft down a steep bank in Ventnor at the weekend.
The incident happened just after 1am on Sunday morning when the car came off Leeson Road, careered though the thin wood and chain link fencing, ending up in a garden in Maples Drive.
Lucky escape
The driver and passenger, a 52 year old man and 42 year old woman, were taken to hospital, according to police reports, those in the car escaped with just cuts and bruises.
As the photos below show, the plunge down the steep bank must’ve been terrifying for those in the car, as well as the residents of the property below it narrowly missed.
The resident OnTheWight spoke to was keen to pass on how impressed they were with the speed and consideration the emergency services acted with. In addition, everything was cleared up a mere twelve hours later.
Concerns over barriers
OnTheWight was told that residents of the area have been concerned for sometime that the protections afforded by the thin wooden fences along Leeson Road do not give enough, if any, protection.
Can you help?
OnTheWight understands that a pedestrian walking along Leeson Road saw the incident take place, making their way down to where the car landed, to see if they could help.
Police are appealing to anyone who might’ve seen the incident or have more information to contact Shanklin police station by calling 101.
