The Cowes Chain Ferry is out of action after a passing boat snagged one of its chains.
It must have happened around 7:30pm as VB Reader, Madeline Paterson, got in touch last night to tell us that it was announced on the 7:30 Red Funnel ferry while it was approaching Cowes.
She told VB, “We had to stop for 10mins for a ship coming out of the river – turns our that it just hit a chain on the chain ferry and has put the chain-ferry out of action for the evening!” (Thanks Madeline and the others who contacted VB later on about it!)
Launch replacement
We’ve been in touch with the Chain Ferry today and that they’ve told us that they’re a replacement launch service for foot passengers.
Work is being carried out on the chain today and there’s a chance that it may be repaired this evening – but they won’t know before 10pm tonight.
The process is hindered by the Ebb Tide as they can’t access the box with the mechanicals in it.
Back at the beginning of October this year, the Cowes Floating Bridge developed a fault with a chain, which stop the normal service working.
Thanks to VB reader Allan Marsh for sending through a photo of the chain wiggly chain last night.
