After the Police and Crime Commissioner election count, Steve Slominski of Eastleigh News (who did such a great job of keeping On The Wight up to the minute with the details of the count of the local PCC votes), sent us some more details and a video interview with the winner, Simon Hayes.
Acceptance speech
Given Simon spends his first day in the office today, it felt relevant to show it and share with you what he said in his acceptance speech.
“When we started this process we had no indication we would get this far. We had no expectation we would win.
“We thought it was important to give voters in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight a chance to vote for an independent candidate and keep party politics out of policing.”
“I am humbled by this result and I’m grateful to the public of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight for the trust they have put in me.”
Michael Mates – Less gracious
The Conservative candidate, Michael Mates, who came second, appeared to be somewhat less gracious in his speech, saying, “The person who won this election … failed to be selected as the Conservative candidate.”
“I am a Conservative, I am proud to be a Conservative and I will never change my colours.”
Video interview
Steve caught up with Simon Hayes, getting a video interview with him, which is below.
