With the cold snap continuing into the weekend (and next week) if you are fortunate enough to be out and about, please keep an eye out for any vulnerable members of the community.
We hear that a large number of people have been unable to leave their houses to stock up on provisions or charge electricity keys.
If you know of vulnerable people in your neighbourhood and have time, do pop in to check whether they’re OK or need anything.
Despite the problems with people travelling to work from many parts of the Island, we hear that a great number of council staff have battled against the horrendous conditions to ensure that as many services as possible remained unaffected.
Cllr Dawn Cousins, IW Council cabinet member responsible for social care, said: “Once again the Island community has already demonstrated its unique ability to rally round and provide neighbourly support. These sterling efforts have provided invaluable support to services such as Meals on Wheels and is to be warmly welcomed and applauded.
“We are sure that this type of support will continue but at the same time we would ask people to be extra vigilant about the needs of their neighbours – especially the vulnerable – during this challenging time.”
“Inevitably though, because of the difficult conditions, it has not been possible to avoid some disruption to services but work had been done to provide for those residents most in need.
“However all of the council’s adult social services offices are open.”
For example all of the council’s adult social services offices in Newport (823340), Cowes (291144), Sandown (408448) and Ryde (566011) are open during normal office hours.
“It is important that we continue this work and the support of the public will be invaluable. I would like to remind everyone that the out of hours emergency number for Wightcare is 821105 and during office hours it is 533772.”
