The CityLink bus service, which is funded by the ferry firm and operated by Blue Star buses, carries over 1 million passengers a year and was rescued by Red Funnel in May when it faced being axed after Southampton City Council and another partner withdrew funding.
The frequency of the bus service has been increased from every 30 minutes to every 15 minutes from Town Quay and Southampton Central Station between 16.15 and 18.45, with a half hourly service resuming after this time. The decision came after consultation with Red Funnel’s user group and feedback from customers.
Murray Carter, customer services director at Red Funnel, said:
This is positive news for our customers who travel in the evening peak and it demonstrates that we listen and act where possible on the feedback we receive. The increased frequency will further improve rail, coach and ferry connections to and from the Isle of Wight.
The CityLink service is free for holders of valid Red Funnel tickets, customers with valid National Rail and National Express through-tickets and Senior Citizen bus pass holders. Passengers travelling without these tickets will pay just £1 per single journey.
