Re:Box, the red phone box on Lind Street in Ryde which bills itself as the Island’s smallest art gallery, is now showing new work by artist Steve Miles.
Steve Miles drew on New Carnival‘s Folktastic Isle Green Giant and Shademakers’ Ship of Hope for the piece.
Creative Island and Re:Box say the work captures the spirit of the Ryde celebrations in the Island-wide CAN YOU HEAR US? programme.
Together they put out an open call in June, looking for an artist to make new work for the kiosk. Steve Miles was chosen.
Six weeks of culture across the Island
The celebration began on 11th September and runs until 24th October 2026.
Creative Island says the programme sets out to bring the Island’s communities together by threading exhibitions and shows through everyday life.
Theatre, carnival, music, public art, folklore and what the organisers call nature connections all appear on the bill.
A £1 kiosk on Lind Street
Re:Box occupies a classic Kiosk No.6 red phone box. Ryde Town Council bought it through BT’s Adopt a Kiosk scheme. For £1.
The council then handed the box to Anmarie Bowler and Zoe Barker, two local artists who set about giving the redundant kiosk a second life as a gallery.
And after dark, lighting inside the box turns it into a lightbox, so the work on show glows like stained glass.
