We were contacted yesterday by someone, (Thanks Bruce!), claiming that there had been a streaker at Medina pool during the Island Games events.
As unlikely as it sounded, we did a little bit of digging with the Police and others (VB _always_ checks its story leads before publishing), and gradually came to the conclusion that someone was pulling our … leg.
Who’d have Adam & Eve’d it – we only got a call this evening confirming that it was true!
International teenage athlete sent home
The Police and the organisers of the Island Games have worked together on a joint press statement, which we have reproduced, in their own words, below …
On Monday 27 June the Police were called to Medina High School to investigate concerns about the behaviour of a young man who was accused of appearing naked in front of several teenagers.
A 16-year-old international athlete involved in the Games was identified and admitted an act of outraging public decency. The complaint was dealt with by the police through a ‘Community Resolution’. The teenager apologised for his actions and was not arrested or charged.
The Organising Committee for the Games, the International Island Games Executive, the School and the Police reacted swiftly and worked together to deal with this unfortunate incident. Jorgen Pettersson, Chairman of the International Island Games Executive stated “This is a very regrettable incident whereby a young athlete took his celebrations too far and we apologise strongly to the School who have kindly allowed us to host our sports on their premises.
“I would like to make it very clear, that any behaviour of this sort will not be tolerated by the International Island Games Executive and as a direct result of this incident, the athlete in question has been sent back home.”
A Hampshire Constabulary spokesman said: “Our investigation found no indecent motives for the teenager’s behaviour and no connection to anyone at the school. This was a sporting celebration where a visiting athlete did not consider the effect his actions could have on other people.
“We would like to thank staff and students at Medina High School and the Games organisers for their assistance. They acted swiftly to report these concerns to us so officers could establish the exact circumstances and take appropriate action.”
