Our thanks to Andy Booth from Strings Bar and Venue, for sharing with readers his reflection of the past year and hopes for 2025. Ed
2024 has been the best year yet for Strings Bar and Venue in Newport. With sell out shows, big named artists and a calendar full of eclectic live music, 2025 promises to be even bigger and better!
When opening in 2017, it was clear from the off that Strings Bar and Venue was needed on the Island. There was a severe lack of a permanent, professional space that both local emerging artists could learn their trade, as well as attract touring acts that would appeal to the Isle of Wight demographic.
A complex and multifaceted endeavour
Running a live music venue is a complex and multifaceted endeavour that requires a blend of creativity, business acumen and logistical expertise. Venue operators must juggle several responsibilities, from booking artists and managing schedules to ensuring compliance with local laws and regulations.
One of the most critical aspects of running a successful live music venue is curating a compelling programme that appeals to diverse audiences while staying true to the venue’s brand and cultural ethos. This involves balancing established acts with up-and-coming talent, creating opportunities for audience growth and artistic development.
Significant struggles
Grassroots music venues in the UK continue to face significant struggles that threaten their survival and cultural contribution.
Rising operational costs, including rents, utility bills, and licensing fees, have placed immense financial pressure on these often small, independently-run spaces.
Strings heavily relies on community, ensuring that the range of music and entertainment can be varied enough to attract regular and returning visitors. In some cases, appealing to the mainland and adding to what is already an attractive location for tourism.
The owners
Owners Claydon Connor and Andy Booth both learnt their trade as musicians on the Island and understand the importance of being able to provide opportunities for local artists.
Partnering with local music college Platform One has been a long-standing relationship and one that regularly provides opportunities for performance and technical experience.
Grassroots music venues vital for emerging artists
Grassroots music venues like Strings are vital for emerging artists as they provide the foundational platform for talent development and exposure. They foster a sense of community and enable direct interaction between artists and audiences, helping musicians build a dedicated fan base.
This nurturing environment is indispensable for the growth of the music industry, ensuring that fresh talent continues to emerge and thrive.
A ‘string’ of accolades
In addition to an increase in shows during 2024 and many positives, it was also a year that saw Strings recognised for a number of accolades.
Firstly, receiving the Outstanding Contribution to Grassroots Music Award 2024, which along with other venues, identified their contribution to the grassroots scene in the UK.
Strings was then nominated for ‘Grassroots Champion’ at the LIVE Awards. Despite not winning the award, the recognition was a sign that the work being done is being acknowledged across the live music industry.
Highlights of the year
Highlights during the year include the visit of New Zealand band Six60, who paid a visit to the Island as part of their Grassroots Tour. The majority of the crowd came from off the Island, including as far as Dubai!
Other notable visitors to the show included Premiership Rugby stars who have been longstanding fans of the band.
So what has been the key? . . . Hard work, consistency and a passion for live music is what makes Strings so special. Where others maybe want to do less, Strings want to do more. With many improvements to the venue over the past few months shows that the venue is intending to be here long term.
2025 announcements are already showing a packed schedule with serious intentions, with Tom Meighan of Kasabian, 2 nights with Trance pioneer Chicane and singer-songwriter Newton Faulkner sold out way in advance.
All the team at Strings would like to thank everyone for their support up to this point and wishes everyone a Happy New Year!
