Appley Tower, a beloved Ryde landmark, is set to embark on a significant restoration journey this November.
Stoneham Construction will spearhead the initiative, collaborating closely with architect, Sean Macmillan of Elmstone Architectural.
A blend of restoration and education
The ongoing restoration will result in restricted access to the tower’s surrounding areas.
However, it’s not all about brick and mortar. The restoration process will also provide students with a unique opportunity. They can visit the tower to learn about heritage building restoration.
Grant assures Tower’s bright future
The future of this iconic Ryde structure now stands secured, thanks to a timely Heritage Lottery grant.
Natural Enterprise, in conjunction with Ryde Town and Isle of Wight Councils, played a pivotal role in obtaining the grant. Their collaborative efforts ensure that the tower remains a point of interest for both locals and tourists for many years ahead.
Brian Friend, Chairman of Natural Enterprise, expressed his delight at the project moving forward. He commented,
“We are delighted to be moving to the next stage to see the tower reopen in 2024. We are also pleased to be able to provide students with the chance to benefit from the work being undertaken.”
David Harris, Director of Stoneham Construction Ltd, also chimed in on the restoration. He said,
“We are delighted to bring the work of our skilled craftsmen to this restoration project and assist in the delivery of this iconic landmark on Ryde seafront for future generations to enjoy.”
Art meets architecture
The restorations are expected to wrap up by June 2024, when an art gallery will be opened on the site by Monkton Arts.
Art enthusiasts and the general public will enjoy free access to the top of the tower. Moreover, visitors can look forward to three insightful exhibitions that shed light on the tower’s historical significance, evolving views, and its role in promoting local tourism.
