Encyclopedia Brittanica:

Thanks to Rob for sharing this excellent news. Well done to Summerfields for being chosen. Ed

Summerfields Primary School in Newport has been selected to take part in an important project involving Encyclopaedia Britannica.

The project which will involve children, their families and school staff having access to the vast Britannica teaching and learning resource will run for six months, covering the second half of the Summer term and the whole of the Autumn term.

This project coincides with the latest release of ‘Britannica School’ which has over 64 million words and is updated every 20 minutes.

Syndikos running the project
Rob Ellis an e-learning specialist with a particular interest in information literacy in the 21st century will be leading the project for Syndikos, an ICT brokerage company that has been working closely with Encyclopaedia Britannica.

The aim of the project is to identify the benefits of using Britannica at school and at home for both pupils and teachers. Recent publicity about Island schools has not been all positive.

At the forefront of education
This project shows that Island schools can be at the forefront of education and shows the commitment of Summerfields to developing the use of ICT in the classroom.

The Headteacher Kay Wood is excited by the prospect of working with such a prestigious company.

Rob Ellis says that,

“Syndikos is proud to be working with Summerfields and Encyclopaedia Britannica. Summerfields is a great school which is deeply committed to its pupils, parents and staff. We are particularly pleased that the service will be available to parents as well as teachers and pupils. We hope that this puts both Summerfields and the Island on the map.”

Great interest from pupils
A number of pupils have been using the service already and are very keen to be involved. They have been showing brothers, sisters and parents their work and are looking forward to using Encyclopaedia Britannica for their work on a regular basis.

Mark Simes, UK Sales Director for Encyclopaedia Britannica is equally delighted with the choice of Summerfields for this study. Mark says,

“We are very pleased to be working with Summerfields and Syndikos.

“This is what we are about as a company. Bringing a project of this quality to the Island is very exciting.”

Is that what they had before wikipedia, grandad?

Did buyers of the old EB books get updates sent them? Amazing to think that, by current standards, after 20 mins their enormous outlay was already losing its value.
