This is the Suzuki Swift, from the competitive class of modern small hatchbacks. We’ve looked at a few of its rivals – Mazda 2, Seat Ibiza, Honda Jazz and (in estate form) the Renault Clio – and this is one of the most compelling cars from its class yet.
Despite being a naturally-aspirated unit, the 1.2 petrol engine is sufficient to provide 93 bhp, an 11.6 second 0-60mph dash, 56.5mpg and an enthusiastic power delivery.
The steering is perfectly weighted and feels well-damped from road imperfections, the manual gearbox is excellent, and the cornering behaviour is acceptably playful without being unsettled or unruly.
Hushed
There is good space in the back for passengers and despite the dash not being much to look at it is well screwed together. Tyre and wind noise is hushed, whilst the ride is never overly troubled by bumps and ridges.
Nothing stands out as an area that had been neglected or cheapened. It is a very solid car.
Best all rounder in its class
Compared to its rivals, it doesn’t quite beat the class leaders in individual attributes – the Jazz’s refinement, Clio’s engine or Mazda 2’s driving dynamics – but it runs each one close enough to become the best all rounder in its class.
Then the Swift’s trump card is played; At £11,930 for the model tested, although extras like Sat Nav and Air Conditioning remain on the options list, it also slightly undercuts most of its rivals.
The only negatives are a lack of real feel though the steering and an awkwardly shaped opening to the smallish boot. If I’m being picky, a few more soft touch materials in the cabin would have been nice too.
Summary
It’s a well rounded 9/10, meaning only a perfect ten from remaining rivals can topple it.
