‘Swim the Wight’ teams all set for Pier to Pier Swimming Race

Four teams representing Swim The Wight will put their best stroke forward by entering the 2021 Pier to Pier Swim (P2P) this Saturday (7th August).

The four teams entered, the Sundial Sprinters, captained by Annabel Stewart, Ventnor Vanquishers, captained by Sandy Ciccognani, Wildheart Wanderers, captained by Victoria Thorneton-Field and the Duver Dashers, captained by Philippa Daley, comprise a mix of strong swimmers, experienced event participants and some entering their first open water swimming event.

Doubled the number of teams
Initially two teams were going to represent Swim The Wight, but as word spread and we connected with more swimmers, we decided to double the number of teams.

As the number of outdoor swimmers on the Island grows, mirroring a national trend, entering the P2P is another way to reinforce a sense of community, to encourage more people to take part in the event and to increase their confidence by being part of a team.

Raising awareness of Swim the Wight
Entering the P2P allows Swim The Wight to continue to raise awareness of our aims and for others to show their support of what we do.

We want an Island where everyone who wants to swim* in the sea can swim safely and where the benefits of sea swimming are known to all, regardless of physical and mental ability. We want our community to be a beacon of hope for all seaside communities, showing that health and happiness do not depend solely on money.

Promoting safe sea swimming
We aim to promote safe sea swimming to all sectors of society, forming a community of sea swimmers who support and encourage each other both in swimming and non-swimming related activities.

We aim to enthuse others by holding events and social activities; support and encourage research into the benefits of sea swimming and enable new people to try out sea swimming, by offering guidance together with moral and practical support.

Where it proves necessary we will campaign to create a safer and more accessible environment for swimmers*.

Many of the swimmers that we have coached this year, have already committed to making it a goal to participate in next year’s event.
