‘Sydney’ Squirrel finds home in Shide

This in from Tracy from Newport Parish Council. Ed

Newport Parish Council are delighted to have supported a new squirrel carving at Sydney Close, Shide.

After a large tree on the public space had to be felled, local resident and keen nature lover Mrs Cole had the idea of commissioning well-known Island wood sculptor Paul Sivell to breathe life again into the stump by carving a characterful squirrel.

Mrs Cole funded the carving herself as she gains so much enjoyment from watching wildlife using the green space and thought a carving would make a lovely addition to the area for everyone to enjoy.

Public liability insurance
Island Roads were happy to allow Mrs Cole to commission the sculpture on the understanding that it was covered by public liability insurance which is when Newport Parish Council stepped in to offer help.

Newport Parish Councillor and local ward member Geoff Lumley said,

“I was delighted to be able to persuade the parish council to take on liability for this wonderful sculpture, which will bring so much pleasure both to Mrs Cole and to local people.”
