Many thanks to OnTheWight readers for your patience over the last 48 hours whilst the website was offline.
It’s very rare that we take the site offline, so when we had to restrict access to the site whilst we checked for PHP vulnerabilities (you may have heard about this global issue in the news), it seemed like the perfect opportunity to rebuild our templates to ensure a faster and more seamless experience for readers.
The new templates are almost identical in look and feel to the previous version, but with some improvements. See if you can spot them.
Readers’ comments return
The really big news for readers will be that we’ve been able to switch comments back on!
We know how much readers have missed the comments section (our inbox over the past two months is testament to that), so we hope you’ll get back into the swing of sharing your views on the issues covered and continuing the conversation at the bottom of the articles.
As it’s been a while, consider revisiting the House Rules for a refresh.
More secure
As we mentioned on our 21st birthday earlier this year, despite the site having several layers of protection, it has come under attack more this year than ever before, and is likely to get worse.
Networks of bots attempt to hack the site on a daily basis (luckily they haven’t got through), but the latest work we’ve carried out should add to the measures we already have in place to keep them out.
Reader supported news
As you know, we choose to not have the website covered in adverts and pops up, which reduces our commercial income, so it is mostly reader-supported.
If you value the work we do to bring you trusted news without distraction, please consider supporting OnTheWight’s running costs.
Through the Stripe website, you can choose to make a one-off payment.
We really appreciate your support and are glad to be back online.
