The George Hotel’s food hygiene rating of 1: Read the full inspection report

An inspection by environmental health inspectors at The George Hotel in Yarmouth has resulted in the high-end establishment being landed with a food hygiene rating of one.

Understanding the ratings
5 is top of the scale – the hygiene standards are very good and fully comply with the law
0 is at the bottom of the scale – urgent improvement is necessary

The most recent inspection took place on 11th September. Inspectors have called for immediate action for seven issues, with another five issues needing to be resolved within one week or one month.

Range of failures
Some of the failures included:

  • Food found past its use by date
  • Oysters and fish that were not date labelled
  • Number of high risk food vacuum packed without date labels
  • Clean and dirty plates too close to raw and cooked food vacuum packers increasing risk of food poisoning
  • Raw chicken stored on top shelves of walk-in chiller next to open container of lettuce
  • Lack of easily accessible hand washing basins
  • Hand washing basin full of utensils
  • Food containers stored on floor of walk-in chiller
  • Dirty work surfaces
  • Floor grates dirty with food debris
  • Area around waste bin dirty with food debris
  • Build up of dirt around door rims
  • Underneath of shelves dirty
  • Seal to fridge split
  • Damaged floor surfaces
  • Missing filter from extraction canopy

News OnTheWight got in touch with The George Hotel on Monday for a comment about the inspection, but they failed to get back to us prior to publication.

Previous failings
This is not the first time The George has found themselves with a low food hygiene rating.

In 2015 the Hotel was given a zero rating, and by 2018 it had only managed to achieve a rating of one.
