The Sun Inn in Hulverstone gains ‘Asset of Community Value’ status

The Sun Inn in Hulverstone can now be listed as an ‘Asset of Community Value’ thanks to a campaign spearheaded by Isle of Wight Conservative MP, Bob Seely.

Mr Seely said he wanted to secure the building’s future as a rural pub or community asset making it more difficult for the 600-year-old pub to be converted to a private house.

Mr Seely launched a petition in January which gained just shy of 350 signatures before it was sent to the council along with a formal application requesting the pub be listed as an Asset of Community Value. A panel met at the Isle of Wight council on Monday 25th March and agreed the application.

Seely: Thank you to the hundreds of people who signed the petition
Mr Seely said,

“Thank you to the hundreds of people who signed the petition for The Sun Inn at Hulverstone to be listed as an Asset of Community Value.

“Thank you to everyone who has supported the campaign, including Brighstone Parish Council who made the formal nomination and Brighstone Village Stores for having the petition on their front counter. Thank you also to the dozens of people who emailed me in support of the campaign.

“The petition and application have now been accepted and agreed.

“This makes it very difficult for anyone to try to get a change of use for the pub. There is still the problem of the current lease, which is too expensive for the pub, but that’s a battle for the future.”

While it would obviously be a disaster to lose Dr Bob’s local, I wonder whether he realises that this is only a 6-month stay of execution? Still, good to see he has all the important stuff well in hand.

Homelessness
Poverty
Healthcare
Social Care
Education
Transport
Climate change
Coastal erosion

The list of things our incompetent MP hasn’t tackled grows longer by the day.

But as least he’s kept up his regular media appearances and temporarily stopped a pub from closing.

Not being a local, I can’t comment on the MP. I live in Northamptonshire but hve been visiting the Island since 1953. However, I do know the Sun Inn at Hulverston very well and would miss it if it had to close. well done with the petition, had I been able to I would have signed it. Too many of our country pubs are disappearing, we need… Read more »

Thanks Dave1950, but isn’t it a pity it takes a mainlander to appreciate that something useful has been achieved by our MP without smothering it with the usual anti-tory sarcasm.

Just a couple of flaws in your thinking: 1. That providing a temporary stay of execution for a public house is a “useful” thing for our MP to be doing. 2. That anti-Tory sentiment is founded in sarcasm. It most certainly isn’t. In my case I’m fundamentally opposed to the Conservative ideology that entrenches inequality in our society and exists primarily to conserve the unearned advantages enjoyed… Read more »
