Matt Tomkinson at The Hambrough

The Terrace Yarmouth welcomes Michelin-starred Matthew Tomkinson as new Head Chef

Last updated:

The Terrace Yarmouth are pleased to announce the appointment of Matthew Tomkinson as Head Chef from 10th September 2024.

Matt is a former winner of the Roux Scholarship who has held a Michelin Star and listing in the Good Food Guide for the majority of his 20+ year career. His formative years at Ockenden Manor and placement at three-star Les Prés d’Eugénie under Michel Guerard ingrained a love of classical cookery that lead to critical acclaim at The Goose in Britwell Salome, The Montagu Arms in Beaulieu and The Hambrough in Ventnor.

At The Terrace Matthew will be working with GM and Harpers Top 20 Sommelier, Tom Fahey to build on The Terrace’s long-established “simple but special” food style.

Fahey: We haven’t appointed Matt to change what we do
Tom comments,

“Since I somehow started running The Terrace in 2020 I’ve wanted to partner with a chef who truly understands quality ingredients and classical, no-fuss dishes cooked with care.

“We haven’t appointed Matt to change what we do, we’ve appointed him because he and I think the same way about food and believe that together we can create something really special.

“As a team we’re not into fine dining – we’re a bistro in a great location driven by great products where you can still have a really special meal, something I know Matt will embrace and take to a level I can’t.

“His appointment also frees up my time to concentrate on our hotel, restaurant and wine offering in Ventnor and our overall goal of bringing great wine to the Isle of Wight.”

Tomkinson: I think Tom and I both share an understanding of what guests love to eat
Matt comments,

“I am excited to take on this role at The Terrace. It will give me the chance to be part of an already successful business run by a team with a passion for the sort of food I love to cook.

“I’m looking forward to making the most of our extensive combined network of local suppliers, from aged Briddlesford Farm dairy beef to spices unique to the Ventnor microclimate, and to creating seasonal menus driven not just by what’s available but also by plain and simple deliciousness.

“I think Tom and I both share an understanding of what guests love to eat – simple, carefully cooked, classical dishes – so expect that to be our focus.”
