People playing chess at Shanklin Chess Club

There’s a growing chess movement on the Isle of Wight and you can get involved

The 50 Plus Centre, 106 Regent Street, Shanklin has now completed its first chess course sponsored by WightAid and Chess in Schools and Communities (CSC).

Charles Charalambous, the Island’s CSC coordinator and tutor, gave the course, which was an absolute success.

Step-by-step, easy to learn system
The course follows a tried and tested, step-by-step, easy to learn system of teaching. A dozen adults, who had never played before, learnt how to play chess in just ten lessons of one hour per week.

At the end of the course some of the pupils said that they hadn’t realised that chess could be so easy to learn.

Playing chess made them analyse each situation, helping to resolve problems.

Ventnor club
It relaxed them and gave them more self-confidence, so much so that two of the pupils have started their own chess club at the Crab and Lobster Tap, Grove Road, Ventnor on a Friday from 2.30pm onwards.

Brading and Newport
Charles has opened a chess club at the Brading Community Centre, High Street on a Thursday from 11am-1pm.

Another new chess club is at the Independent Arts Creative Hub, 48 High Street/St James’s Square, Newport on a Saturday from 12-1.30pm.

Chess Open Day
The Hub will be holding a Chess Open Day on 2nd July from 12-3pm, with a giant chess set placed outside on the square, weather permitting.

Sounds like a fun day not to be missed, after which their chess club will restart in the autumn. Visit their Website or phone (01983) 822437.

Playing chess has many benefits for all ages. Come along or pop into any club.

Winter chess competition
We also look forward to 3rd December when, once again, we will be holding a winter chess competition, sponsored by our local Estate Agent Arthur Wheeler.
