The Isle of Wight Marlins Masters Swim Club have everything crossed that the Pier2Pier Sea Swim Challenge will be able to take place on Saturday 30th July 2022.
This is after having to cancel the 2020 event due to Covid and the 2021 due to the sea conditions. Fortunately almost all of the 150 entrants have stayed loyal and will be coming to, or be from the Island for the event.
Reserve list
Currently there will be 64 male, 84 female swimmers of which 102 are from the mainland and 46 Islanders. We have a reserve list and so will be able to fill places if others cancel.
The swim starts at 12.45pm from the beach to the west of Sandown Pier and the swimmers go across the Bay to the beach outside the Shanklin Rowing Club clubhouse, which is 50 yds from the old Shanklin pier.
Swimmers protected
The swimmers are protected by the Sandown/Shanklin and Ryde Inshore Lifeboat crews, members of the Shanklin Deep Sea Fishermen and around 20 independent Kayakers and canoeists.
Cooper: Event is approaching its 70th year
Bob Cooper, the Marlins Safety Officer said,
“A lot of work by our members and volunteers has gone into the event and it will be so good to see the mass start with the men entering first and the ladies two minutes later.
“This event is approaching its 70th year and with the assistance of the Island kayakers and canoeists we have been able to build up to the strength and kudos that the event now holds in a lot of adventurous swimmers from around the country.”
The first swimmers should be at Shanklin by 1.05pm. All welcome to come observe the start and along the revetment to the finish.
