On Friday 14th September, the Beethoven Broadwood Trio will return to the magnificent music room at NorthCourt, Shorwell, to perform in aid of the Isle of Wight charity Diabetes Research IW.
Frances Mason, violin, James Halsey, cello, and Michael Freyhan, piano, will be performing as part of a chamber music weekend involving players from both the Island and the mainland on which they are tutors.
Each year the trio opens the doors to the public and presents a concert open to the public to raise money for a different charity.
The trio will present a varied programme including works by Mozart, Beethoven and Bloch with entertaining and illuminating introductions.
Diabetes research on the Wight
Groundbreaking research into Diabetes is currently taking place right here on the IW, lead by Consultant Dr Arun Baksi and his team of researchers at Vectasearch, St Mary’s. One of the principal research projects involves specialist training for people with Diabetes so that they, in turn, can act as peer-educators and help other people with Diabetes.
Doctors today have very little of the time, and sometimes the knowledge they need, to adequately support people with Diabetes and this leads to a loss of control with the condition and serious consequences which can include blindness, kidney failure and amputation. Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in working-age adults.
The project has been so successful that is being rolled out in places like India and America where people have either little access to medical support or cannot afford it.
No support from the Government
Despite its obvious success, this charity receives no support from the government and its only income stream comes from the IW Diabetes Research Charity Shop in Ventnor, run by volunteer manager, Barbara Wells whose daughter, now a teacher at Medina College, has had Diabetes since she was 15 months old.
The concert starts at 8pm and costs £10 adults, £2 children, with all proceeds going to support Diabetes Research IW. Wine and soft drinks will be served in the interval. Space is limited so please phone Christine Harrison on 01983 740415 to reserve your seat!
