Two Minutes Silence To Be Marked In Newport

Crosses and poppiesA maroon rocket will be launched from the top of Newport Fire Station’s training tower at 11am on Friday 11 November to mark the start of a two minute silence. A second maroon rocket will be launched at 11.02am to mark the end of the silence.

The two minutes silence is intended to provide time during the working day for people to remember those who have lost their lives in combat ahead of the traditional Service of Remembrance in Newport on Sunday 13 November.

Sunday procession
On Sunday from 10.50am, a procession led by the Isle of Wight Council’s mace bearer will walk from the Guildhall to Sts Thomas’ Square. Members of the procession will join other organisations for prayers in the square before a two minute silence from 11am.

A wreath laying ceremony will follow, before a service of remembrance in Newport Minster.

A number of other services will be taking place across the Island at the same time.

Field of Remembrance
Meanwhile, a field of remembrance will once again be open at Carisbrooke Castle.

Established by the Lord-Lieutenant of the Isle of Wight, Major General Martin White, the field of remembrance is a place where residents can pay their respects and plant a cross for those who lost their lives serving the country. It is located within the Princess Beatrice Garden, a tranquil walled garden behind the castle’s chapel.

The castle will open its doors for people to visit the field of remembrance between 10am and 12noon on Thursday 10 and Friday 11 November when it is normally closed to the public.

Residents can also visit on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 November Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 November during the castle’s normal weekend opening hours which are 10am to 4pm.

Service on Thursday
A service of remembrance will take place at the castle on Thursday 10 November at 10.45am which members of the public are welcome to attend.

Southern Vectis has agreed to supply a free bus from Newport bus station up to the castle each day departing 10.30am from the library stand and returning 11.45am Thursday, 11.30am Friday and 12.30pm at the weekend.
