Letter: GKN workers yet to be consulted on changes

Following on from our report at the end of last month, highlighting concerns workers at GKN have in relation to new working terms, this in from Bob Blocksidge, Unite Delegate IW TUC.

OnTheWight got in touch with GKN for a comment. A spokesperson told us, “GKN Aerospace has no comment to make.” Ed

GKN Aerospace, based in East Cowes, Isle of Wight is threatening its workforce with an increase in its working week from 37 hours to 40.

This follows the managements failed attempt, a short time ago, to reduce premium payments for overtime working.

Trading profit of £139m
The reason given by management for pursuing this policy, is to reduce cost and to maximise efficiency.

This follows a GKN trading profit of £139m over the comparable period in 2012, a trading profit increase of 9%.

GKN, would give the appearance of a company trying to take advantage of the current financial situation in the country at large.

All aspects of life in Britain are under attack, the NHS and its privitisation, Bedroom Tax and lack of investment in the country, while CEOs of companies receive vast sums in remuneration packages and shareholders have never had it so good, while avoiding tax.

Doubtful company profits mentioned
Given the banner headlines, normally associated with the tabloid press of hard times and how everyone should pull their horns in, it could be expected that GKN workers should do the same.

It is doubtful, that, when endeavouring to negotiate the increase in hours, that the management mentioned the company’s profits. No doubt though, they did try to frighten the workforce into submission, by linking job efficiency to job security.

Workers yet to be consulted on the changes
Although negotiations are continuing, it would be interesting to know what the workforce think about the managements plans.

The workers have yet to have a mass meeting, or to be consulted on the changes.
