Ah, it’s that time of the week again, when we can sit down and admire the wonderful shots on the VB Flickr Group Pool.
They say that a photo can tell a thousand words and this shot below by Island photographer Patrick Eden probably speaks ten times that.
For that reason and the 160 words he uses to describe the history of the shot, we’re awarding this the VB Picture of the Week Awards.
Here’s the story behind the photo in Patrick’s own words ….
I visited The Sunday Times in the early 80s to show them my lousy portfolio.
I was to meet “The temporary assistant to the deputy Picture Editor”. He skipped through it pretty quickly and I was about to leave when I noticed a man I recognised, standing in the corner of the room, looking a bit fed up. (it was what Don referred to in his Biography as “his Safari Suit” modeling phase).
I said to the deputy bloke “would Mr McCullin look at my pictures?” He came over, flicked through the folio until he came to this one, remarking “ah this is more like it!”.
When he finished looking through the pics he looked at me and said ‘what you need to do is come and live in the East End for a while, it will toughen you up!”.
I of course scuttled home and became a marine photographer instead.
A gentleman and the greatest of all conflict photographers.
Great work as always Patrick.
Take a moment to look through his other shots.
While you’re at it, why not check out the VB Flickr Pool as well.
