Vectis Isle Pioneers hold two day ‘Suncream & Wellies’ motorcycle trials

Thanks to Wayne for this latest report from the Vectis Isle Pioneers Motorcycle Club’s annual two day trial. Ed

The VIPmcc’s annual ‘Suncream & Wellies’ two day trial was held at Nodewell Farm, Totland, on Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st of August.

This very successful weekend kicked off on Friday evening with a bit of a party! Saturday morning saw the start of the trial – Four laps of twelve sections greeted the riders. Later on Saturday evening the Club held its award presentations for the 2014 season. Congratulations to all those award winners. The celebrations went on until the early hours of Sunday morning!

Individual trials
Sunday’s trial required riders to do another four laps of the same twelve sections, this time the start and end gates were reversed meaning riders tackled the sections in the opposite direction. As far as the Championship was concerned both days were treated as individual trials with a mighty twenty points up for grabs if riders finished first on both days.

After the main event concluded the Club ran a bicycle trial for the youth riders, using some of the existing sections, which proved to be really popular – I’m certain this will become a regular feature. Jos Wright took top spot dropping just one mark. Kyle Jacobs took second place on three marks with Luke Snow in third – well done lads, I have no idea where you found the energy from!

Youth Classes
Jos Wright also took the win in the main trial (on both days) in the Youth Expert class. Jos went round for a loss of 81 on Saturday and 70 on Sunday. Although Jos was on his own in this class, his scores were very competitive on the Expert route. Brendon Penn was able to ride Sunday only, but also put in a confident performance in the Youth Hard class to earn himself ten Championship points.

The competition was close in the Youth Over 80 class but the finishing order was the same on both days. Relative new comer Will Gray-Ling put in an outstanding effort to finish in first place (18 for Sat and 11 on Sun) with Kerry Jacobs in second and Owen Moore in third. Kyle Jacobs earned the maximum twenty points in the Youth Under 80 class.

The youngest riders in the Club battled it out in the E class, Harrison Crickmore and Luke Snow shared the honours on Saturday tied on just seven marks. Dylan Wright finished in second place with Alfie Haydon in third. Harrison was the clear winner on Sunday dropping just three marks. Alfie improved on Saturday’s performance to take second place. Luke Snow found himself in another tie this time with Dylan Wright for third place.

Adult Classes
Course setter Howard Jacobs returned to competition riding this weekend, after an extended absence, in the British bike class. Howard was piloting his trusty triumph, which has had a bit of a makeover, seriously the bike looked stunning!

Mike Taylor with Geoff

Howard took top spot on both days with really competitive totals. Brothers Mike (pictured above) and Geoff Taylor were both competing in the Clubman class – it was Mike who finished in first place on both days with some really confident riding. Geoff took a tumble through the stinging nettles which no doubt hindered him!

Now to the well contested Novice class. Brian Brockwell rode brilliantly on both days dropping seven marks on Saturday and just four on Sunday – good effort. Wayne Brodie just about held off Paul Kent to take second on Saturday but Paul rode really well on Sunday to push Wayne into third.

Nick Symes

Nick Symes (above) took absolute control on the Saturday in the Twin Shock class, Nick once again managed to negotiate all twelve sections without losing a single mark – great achievement Nick. Things were very close between Stewart Freeman and Calvin Wright for the minor placings, Stewart held on to second place by a single mark.

Sunday trial
On Sunday with the absence of Nick Symes it was Ross Haydon who took the win, 1st time out on his recently acquired Fantic machine. Adam Brodie finished in second with Calvin in third. Adam had a miraculous escape on the Saturday – when one of his front forks came apart! Whilst dropping off a small bank, the fork cap, springs and washers narrowly missed his face as they rocketed past, just clipping his safety helmet.

It was really good to see John Death returning to trialling on Sunday after an absence of several years – although judging by his score you wouldn’t know he’d ever been away. John lost just 27 marks on the B course to take the Inter class.

Special thanks
The Club would like to say a special thank you to the Morgan Family for allowing us to use their land for the Club’s flagship event.

I would also like to thank (on behalf of everyone) the Jacobs Family – Howard, Christine, Kerry & Kyle for providing us all with a fantastic weekend of trials, camping, barbecue’s & even bacon rolls for our breakfasts! – Excellent effort guys.

Next meet
The next Club trial will be held on Sunday 20th of September at Chale Farm, with the usual start time of 12 noon.
