A former Isle of Wight bus depot will be demolished, paving the way for a ‘comprehensive redevelopment scheme’.
Demolition plans approved
Turner Property’s plans for demolition of Ventnor Coach Station at 22 Pier Street in Ventnor town centre, including site clearance and erecting a new two-metre-high painted plywood hoarding, have been accepted by council planners.
Asbestos and environmental safeguards
County Hall said the method of demolition would be acceptable and all necessary measures relating to asbestos can be secured by condition.
The council said demolishing the building would have no adverse impact upon protected species.
Interim hoarding and long-term vision
A decision report said,
“The proposed demolition is required to facilitate a comprehensive redevelopment scheme for the site, which has appeared as a harmful element of the Conservation Area for some time.
“The hoarding and site clearance would be an interim measure whilst plans for permanent redevelopment are developed.”
Town Council support and conditions
Ventnor Town Council previously expressed support for the proposal, with the caveat that a full asbestos survey is completed as per instructions from the Isle of Wight Council along with safe removal.
Four conditions are included in the consent, in the interests of ecology, to protect the environment and prevent harm to human health – ensuring that where necessary, any asbestos is removed appropriately – as well as for legal and planning policy compliance.
