CRICKET SEASON DRAWS TO A CLOSE AT VENTNOR
Ventnor brought the curtain down on a successful season at Steephill at the weekend.

On Saturday, the President’s XI were the visitors and batting first totalled 158, skipper and former Ventnor all-rounder Chris Sketchley top scoring with 58. Four home team bowlers took two wickets with Chris Russell, returning to Ventnor action after a successful stint with Wolverhampton in the Birmingham League, finishing with 2-28.

Hampshire’s David Griffiths opened the bowling for Brian Gardener’s side and took two early wickets as Ventnor slipped to 27-2. Danny Briggs with 34 got the innings back on track before the impressive Russell (45) and teenager Charlie Tyler (33) led their side to a five wicket win.

The final match of the campaign ended in a one wicket defeat for Ventnor in a low scoring encounter with Old Tauntonians & Romsey.

A youthful home team could only manage 85 (Danny Briggs 29) but the visitors found the going equally difficult as David Beven made in-roads. Beven’s eight over stint brought him a season’s best 6-17 but despite his efforts, OT’s tail enders got their side home.
