VENTNOR HUMBLED BY HALE
Ventnor slumped to a six wicket defeat at Alton in their latest all day fixture in the ECB Southern Electric Premier Division on Saturday.
Ryan Hale, Alton’s naturalised Australian, was the man who did the damage, smashing a fine 110 in his first Southern League century for three years as the home side comfortably won only their second game of the season.
The hosts’ victory was enough to take them off the bottom of the League with Ventnor slipping to just one place off the basement as they struggle to come to terms with the time game format.
With Mark Fletcher and Andy Whyte injured and Danny Briggs now a regular in Hampshire’s t20 line up, Ventnor gave a debut to Roger Miller, the former Andover skipper, who joined the club from Havant last week.
Miller contributed 39 batting at three as he and Matt Compton (27) helped their side reach 81-3. A splendid knock of 70 from Ian Hilsum pushed the score to 196-4 and with Neil Westhorpe hitting 35 and Sean Nowak 40, Ventnor eventually totalled 254-7 from their 64 overs.
Alton took advantage of a disappointing Ventnor bowling performance, scoring at five an over as Hale dominated proceedings to lead his side to victory inside 48 overs.
Totton & Eling are the visitors to Newclose on Saturday as Ventnor seek a much needed victory. The action starts at 11.30am
DRAMATIC WIN IN t20 FOR VENTNOR
Ventnor bounced back from the previous day’s set back to score a dramatic three run win over Totton & Eling in the second round of the Southern Electric t2o Cup at Southern Gardens.
Sean Nowak top scored with 36 in the Islanders’ modest total of 109, five wickets falling for just 14 runs as the innings petered out disappointingly. Any hopes of a win seemed remote as the home team progressed to 33 without loss before Mark Holmes’s spell of 2-15 brought Ventnor back into the game. Roger Miller and Charlie Freeston then made further breakthroughs and with the hosts wobbling, David Beven took three crucial wickets to give his side the upper hand. An excellent penultimate maiden over from Miller set up a tense finish and with four runs needed from the final delivery, young Beven held his nerve to bowl a ‘dot ball’ to clinch a narrow win for his side.
Newport are the visitors to Steephill on Sunday in the semi finals of the Island Webservices Senior Cup. The match starts at 2pm.
VENTNOR EXTEND LEAD AT THE TOP
Ventnor’s second team continued their fine run to clinch an eighth successive win in Hampshire League Division 3.
Visitors South Wilts III made a decent start before Mark Woodhouse’s spectacular catch accounted for Darren Sargant for 32.
Adam Wilson then took two middle order wickets before Kyle Sharp (3-25) and Gary Cooper (2-13) helped dismiss the Salisbury based side for 186.
Ventnor suffered an early setback when James Cheek was dismissed without scoring but rarely looked back once Ben Woodhouse (36) and Richard Wilson (30) had got the innings under way. Fit again Martin Blackman with 31 and Darren Taylor with an unbeaten 39 saw their side home with eleven overs to spare.
Bottom of the table Fareham & Crofton II are the visitors to Steephill on Saturday.
HEAVY DEFEAT FOR VENTNOR AT SHANKLIN
Chris Lammiman with 74, James Lucy (48) and Stuart Peak (46) top scored for Shanklin’s first team as they rattled up a score of 282 in the Harwoods Renault League on Saturday, Joby Wells taking 4-53 and Steve Weir 4-55 for Ventnor’s third eleven.
After losing Michael Compton, Joe Cotton, Joby Wells and Barney Tyler early on, Ventnor were always up against it and were eventually bowled out for 163, Ali Cotton (37) Steve Attrill (40) and Steve Clutterbuck (31) top scoring. Andy White took 3-32 for Shanklin.
