VENTNOR WIN NEWCLOSE CUP IN ONE SIDED FINAL
The inaugural Twenty20 Newclose Cup was won by Ventnor on Sunday. Charlie Freeston’s side defeated Northwood by eight wickets in the final to take the winners prize of £500.

Northwood decided to bat first on winning the toss but were shot out for just 42 inside twelve overs, Freeston taking 4-10 and 18 year old Danny Briggs, returning from County Championship duty with Hampshire, 4-16.

Newcomer Archie Norris with 18 not out and Martin Blackman (16) saw Ventnor home from only 7.2 overs.

Mark Whillier’s losing side received £250 by way of consolation.

On their way to the final, Ventnor defeated West Island by nine wickets in Thursday’s quarter final tie while Adam Hose thumped a brilliant 92 and Martin Blackman 65 in a convincing win over Carisbrooke Old Boys in Saturday’s semi final.

FRIENDS REMEMBER WILL WESSON
Sunday’s match at Steephill in memory of Will Wesson and attended by Mary, his widow, brought together friends and colleagues of the former Ventnor cricketer, Sandown High School teacher and Hasher runner who sadly died of cancer last year at the age of just 44.

Ventnor fielded a side who played with Will in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s while Ed, his brother, brought a team comprising players from Lensbury, where Will played after leaving the Island.

The visitors batted first and totalled 213-9, Malc White taking 3-37 for Ventnor.

The home side’s response was led by Kevin McArthur and Jeff Hose who rolled back the years with 68 and 40 respectively. However, despite their efforts, Ventnor finished 13 runs short of their target.

Ventnor skipper Steve Clutterbuck presented the Will Wesson Memorial Cup to winning captain Ed Wesson.

SEASON ENDS THIS WEEKEND
Ventnor’s season comes to a close this weekend with home fixtures against Brian Gardener’s President’s XI on Saturday and Old Tauntonians & Romsey on Sunday.

Both matches start at 1pm.
