Ventnor Cricket Club Results and FixturesVENTNOR DEFEATED AS HAVANT GAIN REVENGE
Ventnor fell to their fifth Southern Electric Premier Division defeat of the season at Newclose on Saturday, going down by five wickets to Havant.

Mark Fletcher (36) and Richard Wilson (48) compiled an opening partnership of 77 for the first wicket but at lunch the Islanders had used up 45 of their 64 overs in scoring 105-1.

Wilson departed immediately after the break and when Roger Miller followed soon afterwards for 20 the pressure was on the middle and lower order to increase the tempo. Against spin duo Chris Morgan (4-54) and Richard Hindley (3-41), that was always going to be difficult and with so few overs remaining, wickets perished in the efforts to post a challenging target. Only Ian Hilsum (19) and Charlie Freeston (18) made any in-roads as the home side reached just 180-9 from their full allocation with Mark Whyte and David Beven scrambling a few runs at the death.

Any hopes Ventnor harboured of repeating their success at Havant Park in May evaporated after an opening stand of 104 between Mark Miller (61) and former Staffordshire man Steve Dean left the Islanders staring a heavy defeat in the face.

They did rally to take five wickets (Roger Miller 3-31, Sean Nowak 2-56) but Dean’s fine innings of 72 ensured Havant secured a comfortable victory with plenty of overs to spare.

Freeston’s side face a tough trip to top of the table Bournemouth on Saturday.

IN-FORM CHEEK LEADS FROM THE FRONT
Ventnor’s second team rattled up an eleventh consecutive win to increase their lead at the top of Hampshire League Division 3, defeating nearest challengers St Cross by 32 runs at Steephill on Saturday.

The home side were given a terrific 108 run start by teenage openers James Cheek (53) and Adam Hose (58) and eventually totalled 238-8 from their 45 overs, Martin Blackman hitting 43.

Cheek then got to work with his leg spin to claim 3-29 from an excellent ten over spell to help reduce the Winchester visitors to 82-6. What seemed like a routine win then turned into a much tighter contest as Burrows (31) and Burridge with a fine unbeaten 80 added 104 for the seventh wicket. It was Gary Cooper’s return to the attack that proved decisive as he dismissed Burrows in the closing overs to clinch another win for the Steephill side.

Ventnor travel to Old Tauntonians & Romsey on Saturday.

VENTNOR CLINCH WELCOME VICTORY
Ventnor’s third team celebrated a much needed two wicket win over Ryde Cavaliers in the Harwood’s League on Saturday.

As Cavaliers batted first, Chris Higgins with 40 top scored in their total of 173, Malc White (2-26) and Jack Lyons (4-28) the most successful Ventnor bowlers.

Veteran Nigel Cox with 38 gave his side a decent start in reply but it was Alastair Cotton with 50 and teenager Marcus Toms (39 not out) who secured a second league victory of the season with four overs remaining.

VENTNOR DEFEAT PUTNEY IN MEMORIAL CUP GAME
Ventnor defeated Putney by 17 runs in Sunday’s annual fixture in memory of Ventnor’s late President Maurice Lickens, who also held a similar post with the London Club before moving to the Island.

Martin Blackman (61) and David Beven (58) top scored for the home side in their total of 243 with the visitors responding with 226-8.
