Twelve-year-old Koichi lives with his mother and grandparents in southern Japan, in the shadow of the active volcano Sakurajima. His younger brother Ryunosuke lives with their father in the north. Separated by their parents’ divorce, Koichi’s only wish is for his family to be reunited.
When he learns that a new bullet train line will soon open linking the two towns, he believes the rumours that dreams will come true at the moment these new trains first pass each other at top speed.
Koichi sets out on an adventurous journey with friends and family, each with their own hopes, to witness a miracle.
