Thanks to Fred for this write-up from Ventnor Library’s celebrations on 4th February. In his own words. Ed
Saturday 4th February, once again saw a mini-festival of music, poetry and prose to celebrate National Libraries Day.
The day was also intended to celebrate the continuation of Ventnor Library and Ventnor Music Library as a part of the mainstream County Library Service.
Last year the library nearly became “volunteer-run” and the music library taken away to be moth-balled. Ventnor’s Mayor, Steve Stubbings opened the day with a reminder of the importance of Ventnor’s library services.
Ten acts performed
This year hosted ten different acts: Second Time Around; Slombers Woke; Harry Verey; Cephalodidge; JC Grimshaw and Family (with one song from Angelina); David Hughes; Simon, Ross and Damien; Mick Watson; Rob & Carolyn; and The Hillmans.
Between the music, reading from their own works were Jan Toms, Jamie Macaulay, Joanne Thornton, David Yates, and Caroline King, Val Bridgman and David George also read excerpts from Christin Battison and Gay Baldwin respectively.
If you missed the day, you missed some treats. JC’s family charmed us with wonderful ukulele playing from the children Tilly and Sol, and Jamie’s Harlequin poem was spell-binding.
Authors and musicians provided signed books or CDs for raffle prizes, presented before the Hillmans rocked us to closing time.
