Ventnor Wombles Get Busy in Bonchurch

Thanks to Womble Wendy for her latest report. This busy Womble deserves a medal for her hard work in keeping Ventnor litter free. Ed

Ventnor Wombles Get Busy in BonchurchOn Sunday 27th June, Ventnor Wombles litter picked the revetment between Bonchurch Pottery, Shore Road, Bonchurch and Wheelers Bay.

It was a beautifully hot sunny day and once again we were greeted by two locals saying “Thank you”, the famous Ventnor Walls Lizards.

There were lots of people walking past and no-one else except the Wombles saw the lizards. In one hour and twenty minutes, four bin bags and one dustbin of rubbish were collected.

Poo eeee
There was the usual dog poo bags thrown over the fence by people too lazy to carry the bags to the next dog poo bin. You’ve got to walk past a dog bin at either end to get on off the revetment, plus there is a dog poo bin half way along!!!

Fly tipping disgrace
The worst area, behind the fence where the boats are parked. Here we found a dustbin, three car/boat batteries, tins of paint, boat varnish, bits of wood, plastic bottles etc.

I phoned Cllr Chris Welsford to report the batteries as they were too big and heavy to be carried. He is going to get in touch with the Environmental Department at IW council to have them disposed of in the correct way.

Jaw dropping ignorance
While litter picking, I spoke to a senior couple sitting on one of the seats. They asked what we were doing. I explained all about Ventnor Wombles. Afterwards the lady said to me “So once you’ve collected and bagged the rubbish up do you dispose of it by throwing it in the sea?”

I managed to pick up my bottom jaw from the ground, told her it goes to gasification or landfill and departed. So shocked and surprised that a nice couple of their age didn’t realise it have the common sense that the days of dumping our rubbish at sea stopped long ago.

Thanks once again to regular Wombles, Mike and Womble Bryan, on holiday for a few days and originally from the World famous Wombles of Wimbledon Common.

The Beautiful Gardens of Bonchurch
The Bonchurch Community Association were asking the public to use the car parks in Leeson Road and Shore Road. As I drove past early on Saturday morning, I noticed all the rubbish in Leeson Road (viewpoint) car park.

So on my way home I stopped off and litter picked it. Within half and hour, half a bin bag of rubbish had been collected. Then I went to Shore Road and litter picked the car park and picnic area, not as much rubbish here as in Leeson Road car park.

Now both car parks were clean and presentable to the visitors coming to look around the village and the beautiful gardens.

Next litter pick
The next Ventnor Wombles litter pick will be on Sunday 25th July, 11am Sea Breeze children’s playground on the Eastern Cliffs.

A litter pick to get the playground tidy for the start of the sumer holidays. Just bring yourself along, litter picks and rubbish bags provided.

It’s up to you how long you want to litter pick for, fill one bin bag or litter pick for an hour and stay until we can do all that we can.

If you know or an area that could do with a litter pick, then call Womble Wendy on 855947 or come over and say hello to Womble Wendy and Womble Pistache if you see them our on their dog walk litter pick.
