Vestas Protest: National Day of Action

As the protest against the loss of 600 jobs at Vestas continues, today sees another National Day of Action.

Vestas Protest: National Day of Action: MarchAll across the UK, groups and organisations are showing their support for the protest by wearing green, holding rallies and marches.

On the Island a march from Church Litten at 12.30 to County Hall is planned. The rally at County Hall will feature speakers from the RMT and many ex-Vestas workers hoping to raise further awareness for their fight to get more green jobs on the Island.

Later this evening a gathering will take place at Chicago Rock Bar in Newport where prizes for the best green fancy dress outfit include a PS3.

Yesterday, some ex-Vestas workers gathered more support from attendees of the TUC Conference including Ed Miliband.

Thanks to Tony Kelly from the Ryde Trades Union Council for this shot from the conference.

“exceptional value to the council tax payer”

Apart from being morally indefensible. Not that that ever bothered Beynon, of course, who knew the price of everything and the value of nothing.

Will Dave ‘two saucers please’ Burbage now have to forgo the former pension that depended on his not having another job?

That is a very good question. But I suspect we may never know the answer.

I’m glad he is willing to ‘go on the books’ and think this also bad news for Stewart Love.

Mr Love is unlikely to wear the Chief Exec crown now is he, despite what looked like assurances from the Tories, pre-election.?

Just because the councillors are seeking to change the set-up doesn’t mean that Burbage will accept it.

He may just decide to leave when his contract ends in July.

And depending what he was being paid on contract and is being offered PAYE means the council will now have to pay him a lot more for him to get the same remuneration on a monthly basis

I think I read somewhere that he has accepted but has agreed to forgo any pension from the job. I expect if he took a pension it will come under the new rules for council pensions and will also make his current pension fund that he got before he went as a consultant also come under the new rules. I am not that well informed about the… Read more »

Probably he can keep his local government pension + new local government monies as long as they do not exceed his last paid local government employment and presumably adjusted for any pay increases between ‘retirement’ and this new Council job. All probably laid out in the Local Government Pension Regulations A further question; does Dave Burbage Ltd have any other clients and other employees? If Yes how… Read more »

If it helps, here are some facts and figures from official documentation: Dave Burbage left Newham Borough Council in 2007 on a wage of £158,982 p/a to grace us with his presence, courtesy of an old London chum, Joe Duckworth, then our council’s CX, now boss of the League Against Cruel Sports. Mr Burbage’s retirement from Newham after 27 years was announced in the council’s newsletter of… Read more »

All I hear is lots of meddling by the new council. Why is it that the new leader is not more decisive? Having inherited this situation (with the end of DB’ contract in sight) This council should be looking at a suitable and more affordable replacement as opposed to messing around grabbing headlines. My question to Councillor Stephens – What are YOU going to save by making… Read more »

Oh dear Albert Street, you are really beginning to sound like a bitter ex-councillor.

@ MIB – No I am not an Ex-Councillor I like to think that I am a voice of reason. The new Council has a wonderful opportunity to put things right and in my opinion this is not the right way to go about things. I do not agree with the way DB was employed or on the amount of money he is being paid. However, having… Read more »

Hi Albert, a vision of what?

A vision beyond just cutting budgets. A vision on productivity within the council. A vision on delivering services we actually pay. This would be a good starting point.

Their vision isn’t about cutting budgets, it’s about improving the services to the Island.

The change of Dave Burbage’s role from contract to PAYE will actually cost the council slightly more than before, but it is morally improved.

That is what is important to many Islanders.

@ Trevor – The current set of DIRECTORS AND MANAGERS are wholly focused on budget cuts – FACT. The new council may or may not be focused on improving serviced to the Island. This does not necessarily mean that the newly elected Councillors will get their own way. I can not accept the moral argument that increases costs when there is an end date in sight. I… Read more »

What does Dave Burbage actually do, then?
What evidence is there that he is better at doing it than anyone else?

Having spoken to people who work at County Hall, I hear that Dave Burbage is very good at his job, so I can see no reason why the new leadership would want to get rid of him.

This is from the London Pensions Fund Authority – LPFA – notes on re-employment for pensioners within the LGPS. London Boro of Newham could adminster their own fund but may use LPFA for their expertise. Re-employed pensioners The LPFA will not abate the pension payable on account of re-employment with any employer that commences on or after 1st April 1998, except where the pensioner could re-enter the… Read more »

I feel ALL previous contracts of employment with officers, directors, advisors etc. should end when an administration is voted out of power.

Of course they could well be successfully taken on again on their merits if they had a good track record and were previously considered value for money, but I feel the current shower would be struggling on that basis.
