The Ventnor Film Society starts the new season of film at the Ventnor Winter Gardens with Vicky Cristina Barcelona.
Two best friends, Vicky and Cristina, go to Barcelona for the summer. They share everything, except their taste in men.
Vicky is the sensible, studious one, whilst Cristina is impulsive and romantically adventurous.
At a restaurant, the women are approached by Juan, a handsome, softly spoken painter, who invites them to Oviedo for the weekend.
The comic entanglements that ensue include the appearance of Juan’s crazy ex-wife (a wonderful performance from Cruz).
This is a terrific return to form for Woody Allen with a richly comic tale. For all its meditations on romantic disappointments, it is a light and sunny film. Barcelona looks wonderful.
Anyone in need of some superior escapism should see it.
